Our History
Fairfield Youth Football and Cheer Giants are a member of Fairfield County Football League. The FCFL is a youth football league comprised of 8 Member Organizations (Darien, Bridgeport, Fairfield, New Canaan, Norwalk, Ridgefield, Stamford, Trumbull, Westport and Wilton). The FCFL was begun in 2001. The founding Member Organizations were Darien, New Canaan, Westport and Wilton. The Fairfield Wildcats joined the FCFL in 2005 as the Fifth Member Organization. In 2010 we welcomed The Ridgefield Raiders Youth Football Program, recently we have welcomed Stamford and Norwalk to solidify the League for the future.
The FYF Giants were formed when the two Fairfield Youth Leagues (Wildcats and Giants) combined in 2018. As part of the merger The Giants, who were founded in 1966 and have had tremendous success throughout the Northeast and Pop Warner nationally, agreed to join the FCFL. The combined program took on the Giants name to celebrate the longstanding history of youth football in Fairfield. Our Cheer program celebrates our football teams with sideline cheer for games and competing with other towns throughout CT and beyond during indoor competition season.
The Tackle program has had tremendous recent success with multiple Super Bowl wins over the last 15 years. Our 2019 7th grade team under coach Mark Cirilli was crowned champion with their win over Wilton marking the merged programs first championship. In 2020 the program battled Covid protocols yet 4 of the 5 age groups made their age group Super Bowl. 2022 was perhaps the best season in program history with Modified winning the championship (3rd year in a row Fairfield led the way in Modified!), BOTH 5th grade programs going undefeated and 6th Grade was the runner up!
As a program we do not have "cuts" or an "A" and "B" Team, instead we focus on taking kids who have a commitment to being an outstanding teammate, are willing to work hard, become tough and turn them into football players so they can compete in the High School ranks. It is important to note what kids are in 5th-8th grade is NOT what they will be in high school. We need to develop a lot of kids to help this town compete in the future!
The fastest growing segment of FYF has been the flag program. In 2019 over 800 children participated in flag football in Fairfield's in-house town league. Games are held at Historic Sullivan Field and competitions can be seen throughout the fall on the weekends in an idyllic setting! The league added divisions (Now Kindergarten-8th Grade can play Flag!), purchased Soft Helmets to maximize safety, and introduced officials, playoffs, a jamboree and Super Bowl weekend to maximize the excitement. In 2019 a Spring Flag program was added, it has become a great way for kids to be introduced to THE FASTEST GAME IN FAIRFIELD and get ready for the fall! Flag has shown to be a great way for kids to learn the basics of the game playing with their age group and peers. In the fall of 2019 a "travel" option, Modified Flag, allowed 3rd/4th graders to play other towns in flag football with full pads. The inaugural season proved to be a huge hit with Fairfield's two teams coming 1st and 3rd in the regular season standings. Modified has proven to be a great transition for children and families interested in playing tackle while wanting to wait to play tackle until 5th grade.
The future is bright with the FYF Giants with a healthy board, positive revenue and participation growing. We look forward to continued growth within the league and focusing on some long term capital projects that will set the league up for perpetuity.
